Welllllll, I have to first finish up Breaking Dawn (that's the fourth book in the Twighlight series). I'm happy the book arrived so quickly. I can't wait to start it - and I'll totally let you know how it goes. ::)

Basically a story about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. Has many twists and turns. Very addicting. Absolutely a must read. It reads quickly and is hard to put down.

I skipped this whole thread due to fear of spoilers (I MAY one day either watch the movie or read the book, although I doubt it), but I would like to know:
In what way does this new vampire fad compare with Anne Rice's "The Vampire Chronicle" books? (you recall the movie "Interview with a Vampire," with Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Kirsten Dunst? That series is what I am referring to)
Just based on the commercials it seems a lot more, shall I say, girlie?

This one is about vampires.... in high school! It is a vampire series for teenage girls and the movie is a crappy chick flick.... Dont worry, I didnt read the books.
Dont ask why I know about the movie.

Yeah it really is not even in the same realm as Anne Rice. It is more a girlie and was intended for teens. Though I have to admit, I love the books and many people I know are reading them too. They are entertaining to adults, though not sure to male adults. Maybe.

To use the words from a pretty funny review, I'd say that Meyer's version is "coitus interruptus" and Rice's version is "coitus cornacorpia-us". (I made up that last word).
FOR THOSE MOVIE GOERS OUT THERE, JUST DYING TO GET A TICKET AND SIGH AND BE WOOED BY THIS FLICK, I URGE TO READ THIS REVIEW. I laughed so hard after I read it, now, I'm fu*king dying to see this movie!
Here's the review, this chick is so funny: http://laineygossip.com/Twilight_mov...aspx?IsMicro=0

You may want to try these if you are into Adult Vampires.
I just finished reading a alternate reality series about a Paramortal psychologist,
who is also a black ops Marine. She kicks ass.
She is also a sex therapist for Paramortals.

Dragon, I'm going to check those out. I think the Twilight is well, it caters to a 'high school' crowd. The books might be good though but I like a little more to my novels than the 'he loves me, he loves me not'...

Oh, these are much more than that. LOL
Particularly in the third book, where her expertise as a sex therapist, comes into play.

It doesn't even compare. Twilight is a high school romance with vampires. That's it. It's supposed to have an edge because of the vampires, but pretty much fails because the vampires are cliche and unoriginal, and not at all devilishly fun and complex like Anne Rice's vampires. It does succeed, however, in attracting all of the many relatively conservative girls who would never have read any true vampire horror and who wouldn't be able to handle Anne Rice's vampires but can handle Stephenie Meyer's tame ones, and so think they are edgy and cool. And so now it's mainstream. Tale as old as time!
And yes, the south park episode explains it all, per say.

I won;t let my (10-year old) daughter read these books.
Seriously--I think these books set a bad example for young girls. Bella lives only for Edward, obsesses all though the books if he loves her, feels that she's not good enough for him, ect. She literally wants to die and give up all her dreams and her family so that she can be with him. And Edward creepily stalks her, watches her as she sleeps, follows her around and takes the battery out of her car to prevent her going to see a guy he doesn't like (Jacob).
The second book is even worse...they are both suicidal because they aren't together and only save each other in the end because their luv is so twu. *pukes*
This genre isn't new. The girl-is-so-weak-and-must-be-saved-by-a-shining-dark-knight is a romance novel staple. But romance novels aren't typically read by tweens, nor do they have such an obsessive following. I think there is real danger is teaching young women that they should wait around for a saviour or give up their lives and futures for a good-looking guy (and honestly, what else does Edward have going for him besides his *sparkiness*? He's as boring as an old shoe!). I would much rather that my daughter had ass-kicking heroines like Buffy to look up to!

Hahaha! Yes. Buffy is much better. And yeah, Edward is "gorgeous" and dull. His over-protectiveness of Bella did quickly turn into oppression. There was a lot of oppressive behavior enacted by both Edward and Jacob, really. And Bella was weak in just about every way, which would be great if she had developed into a strong individual by the end, but she didn't!
Actually, most romance novels these days have much stronger female leads than Bella. I'm a romantic at heart and I love to read about intense relationships where the two characters love each other more than anything, but both are strong individuals... but Edward and Bella did not feel that way. I didn't feel that they loved each other. Whenever danger threatened, they acted like they did, to the extent that they wanted to sacrifice their lives for one another. And yet I didn't feel like this was believable at all, coming from them. Something was lost from point A to B: I couldn't see any development of their relationship from shallow infatuation to sacrificing their lives to protect one another. And they both seemed pretty immature throughout. A relationship should allow each character to blossom and develop, but that didn't happen here.

All you need to write a good romance novel are phrases like these:
"He tasted her sweet nector, letting the smooth honey into his mouth as she moaned softly "
"She felt his hardness pressed against her through the thinness of her robe"
"Grasping his manhood, Radcliff longed for sweet Chessa to release his molten passion"
"Shayne was going to have her. He was going to take her. Although looking down at Cynthia, defiant even as she pressed her hips against him, he knew that their union was inevitable. His impending erruption inside her was as avoidable as a volcano."
"Entrenched in the agonizing moment of climax, Millie felt the hottness of his need explode onto her stomache as he pulled out of her at the last instant."
"Coyly, Emma gazed at Horatio's obscenly erect penis, unable to hide her desire."
"As she clamored above him, Briana reached for his glistening Stallion, gently but firmly, feeling it's hardness as she guided it into her center."
"Byron thrusted into her as if he were trying to meld their bodeis into one, as if he were trying to drown within her flesh.
"Unable to hold back any longer, Ariel felt the rushing waves of pleasure over take her as Dillan relentlessly pounded his flesh within her."
"Emma quivered uncontrollably as Léandre breathed upon her engorged, moist sex." lmao!

Guys watch porn. Girls read romance novels. Porn is actually on a lower level, so...

LMAO! Did you just have a collection of bodice rippers handy when you posted or what???
Speaking of vampire fic that good tho, I am totally addicted to "True Blood". Have 4 of the books as well. I love a heroine that stands up to the vampire (and ends up saving his ass more than once as well!).

OK, so I did it. I went and saw Twilight last night. It lived up to the potential I thought it would. As a teen I would have loved it. As an adult, it was pretty good, but will not make my top list.

I'm dying to know, the scene where Edward sucks the venom out of Bella, is his face as torturedly hillarious as I've heard. How was that part of things, were you wimpering in laughter at all during it?
