Religulous...movie.
So...anyone see it? The movie by Bill Maher?
As much as I complain about the debates here sometimes. At least they can be REAL debates. I hate one sided debates with stupid people. While admittedly there were some funny things in that movie it was only about one thing....stupid questions involving stupid people for easy stupid answers for comedy sake. And since most americans are stupid most people will be like "OMG that movie rocked! This is why religion is stupid!" Not even realizing what just happened.
All Bill did was look for people who either:
A. Didn't know much about their faith.
B. Were religious nuts.
C. Were to stupid to answer something right when he twisted it,.
D. Other.
If he actually asked people who were well versed in their religion and all it wouldn't have been funny and obviously no one would want to see it. But we all know this. Its also easy for someone who failed at being religious to pretend they know the question to ask other religious people like he did. Anyone can do that. If you failed then obviously you did something wrong and mocking the religion is your way of being angry at it because you know you didn't have what it takes to be better then you should have been.

I thought this movie was really uneven. the last 10 minutes (with the 'end times' stuff) was completely out of place with the tone of the rest of the movie. And I agree that there wasn't any substantive debate. That said, there were some pretty funny moments and I did LOL at it so...*eh* It was just okay for me.

I thought he did a right good job with it.
I'd give it 3 1/2 stars out of a possible 5.
The one part that annoyed me is when he wouldn't let the anti-Zionist Jewish man provide his viewpoint. Maher falsely assumed the guy was denying the Holocaust and he wasn't. Maher basically has fallen for that whole trap and doesn't understand how a person can be anti-Zionist yet NOT be a denier, nor anti-Semitic. I expect more from him because he is a very intelligent man.
If it wasn't for that one thing, I'd probably of given it a 4.
On the other hand, as far as Bill not being fair to people with faith, I thought he was very respectful to the men in the Truckers chapel, where they were all believers. Maher had a conversation with them and allowed them to pray for him, and he didn't crack any jokes or be a smart ass. Considering he is an atheist and an outspoken one at that, my admiration of Maher went up a few notches for his respect in that instance. He seemed to respect that the men were sincere and also, the men did not try to beat him on the head with their beliefs, they simply shared them. Good stuff imho.
So I do not understand the accusation that he only looked for dumb asses.

I don't think Maher is an atheist, actually. At least not avowedly. In 2002 he told the Onion Club that, "I'm not an atheist. There's a really big difference between an atheist and someone who just doesn't believe in religion. Religion to me is a bureaucracy between man and God that I don't need. But I'm not an atheist, no. I believe there's some force. If you want to call it God... I don't believe God is a single parent who writes books".
