Racism at Tea Party, surprise, surprise...
First, Tom Tancredo's speech: “People who could not spell the word vote or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House — name is Barack Hussein Obama,” Tancredo told the audience. “The revolution has come. It was led by the cult of multiculturalism aided by leftist liberals all over who don’t have the same ideas about America as we do.” He goes on to suggest that there should be a reading test for voting. I remember those...they were used to keep black people voting in Alabama. Yet Tancredo insists that his remark wasn't about race...just because he says so, I guess.
Megan McCain, daughter of John McCain and some one I usually hate with a bloody passion, replied, "Congressman Tancredo went on TV and he was the first opening speaker and he said, ‘People who could not even spell the word vote or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House whose name is Barack Hussein Obama.’ And then he went on to say that people at the convention should have to pass literacy tests in order to be able to vote in this country, which is the same thing that happened in the 50’s to prevent African Americans from voting. It’s innate racism and I think it’s why young people are turned off by this movement. And I’m sorry, but revolutions start with young people, not with 65-year-old people talking about literacy tests and people who can’t say the word ‘vote’ in English." If only her father had her courage.
Teaparty Keynote Speaker Rich Scarborough said, “America is a country of legal immigrants but the Left has turned it into a country of invaders,” he offered bluntly. “Look at Europe and the rampant invasion of England. They are practising Sharia law and I think this crew is going to fight that.” Mr Scarborough also outlines how the US is a “special country” – more than any other in the world – and that is how God intended it. He adds: “If we are to become 30 per cent Hispanic we will no longer be America. That would be a bad thing.”
You know, this isn't news really. Anyone paying attention has know for a long time that rampant racism was at the heart of the Tea Party. Look at the Birthers and the fear/rage directed at Obama--a black man who dared to rise about his 'place'. These people are stuck in the 19th century. They have a deep-seated fear of the 'Other' and a deeper sense on entitlement and frustration that someone of color has usurped their god-given place. Their beliefs and actions are appalling and embarrassing. They speak to what is worst about America. But in a way, I'm glad these cockroaches have come out into the light of day. As Nelson Mandela said, "Sunlight is the best purifier."

I have to agree with much of what this guy said. If you cannot read, how can you know who you are voting for? While the old Jim Crow laws are truely racist, being able to understand the English language and read a ballot in English should be required. If you need assistance because you are blind or have some disabling circumstance, then that is fine.... but you need to be able to speak the language and read it well enough to find your candidate of choice on the ballot. The United States should not have ballots in Spanish, or any other language other than English, and should move to make this law... which will never happen while the Dems are in office. If I moved to Mexico, or any other country south of the border, would I be given the same assistance? Unlikely.

I don't see any of those remarks as racist unless being stupid is a race. Megan McCain is wrong.

Nice. Having trouble with math does not mean that I have trouble with logic. But yes I do belong in the Tea Party because they are against both parties who are leading our country into ruin. And I have trouble making the connection because none exists. Have you ever seen that video - Americans Are Stupid? And these are the people voting in this country. That was the point being made. People who thought they would not have to pay their mortgage or car payment anymore if they voted for Obama. Yeah right. LOL

Ya, I saw that episode of the daily show also. If you want to look at the extreme ends of who voted for who then you will surely find some stupid, toothless hics who voted for McCain simply because they really do hate black people... Now we can look at these people and make blanket statements about the rest of the people who voted for a certain candidate, exactly what your teaparty clown did, or we can grow up.

Ugh no IT DOES NOT. I use logic every day in my job and my life without having to do algebra and physics.
And yes I have watched some of the tutorials you sent me.

I only used the Obama example because that is the one that came to mind first. Of couse stupid people voted for both candidates - not knowing what their candidate stood on and what their background was. Whats your point anyway? This comment was about stupid people voting and you relating it to racism and me relating it to stupid people.

Math is ENTIRELY LOGIC. If you arent good at math its BECAUSE you arent good with logic. Just because you can make it through the day just fine doesnt mean you have a good grasp on logic. It just means that whatever you are doing seems to work, even if you dont entirely understand why.

If you dont see the inherent racism in the comments made by the teaparty clown then you have SERIOUS trouble with logic. If you are just being a teaparty apologist you might want to consider that his racism is quite transparent.

This has gone way off topic but I'd like to make one more point. I understand that math is logic - a certain type of logic (abstract logic perhaps?). In my job, I am an analyst and a consultant - which means I take global data and make determinations and recommendations to a top global chemical company based on that data. I am very good at my job. If I had no logic, I would have been out of a job a long time ago doncha think?

They like you to think that but I dont believe its true. I think on the surface it may seem true but the real objective behind it is to oppose Barack Obama and in the end it will be steered towards supporting the Republican agenda after all isn't Sarah Palin part of it she was just speaking to a Tea Party crowd? Have you seen any Republican politicians criticized by the movement? Look at the rally's everything they stand against is Targeted toward Obama or Democrats (dont forget the Obama Nazi and witch doctor signs). Id like it if they were really non partisan but they are not. If you pay attention over the next few years you will see that the Tea Party will support Republican candidates who wont do shit about the deficit or illegal immigration or any of your other issues. Also you will see the people that the tea party supports the corporations especially defense and oil at the expense of the health, safety, and financial security of America.

Its there but you need to know the history of race relations and voting in America to see it. Literacy tests (and poll tax's) were used in the deep south to keep blacks from voting even after the federal government gave them the right to (there goes that damn government again taking away our freedom to be racists).
It is obviously implied (seriously you dont see it?) that Obama was elected by dumb getto blacks and no good illegal immigrants and that if only the decent people voted then we would have had..... yes you guessed it the Republican John McCain (so wait I thought they were non partisan?). Add to that all the shit about Obama being from Nigeria and not a US citizen. So you don't see how an old white politician from the south asking for a literacy test to allow voting and stating that Obama voters cant even pronounce or spell the word vote is racist?

Have you ever seen that video - Americans Are Stupid? And these are the people voting in this country. That was the point being made. People who thought they would not have to pay their mortgage or car payment anymore if they voted for Obama. Yeah right. LOL

Wow so some right wing pundit made a video showing stupid people and now all the supporters of Obama were expecting to not have to pay their mortgages. Do you know even one person in real life that thought that Jena? Give me a camera and enough time and I will get you a video of Americans who think the earth is flat.
Let me just add that during the 6 years that Bush was in office and had majorities in both the house and senate what did the Republicans do about Illegal immigration? Jack Fucking Squat that's what nothing and do you know why? Because corporate America need cheep labor and they really don't give a fuck what the tax payers of America have to deal with because of it. Illegal immigration will be fixed when the corporations that run the government decide that its to their economic advantage and not a second sooner.
Yes I know Bush is gone but his legacy and the legacy of the actions of the Republicans looms over us. The wars and deficits are his and his parties, the two newest activist judges in the supreme court are his. Wow what a bonus for the corprotocracy they were eh? How about that nice decision that allows them unrestricted spending on our campaigns after all what was wrong with the system that more money couldn't fix? Im sure we trust the motivations of a group of people who believe in profit above all else eh?
So look this tea party is a scam to get people back to the republicans what ideas have they come up with? All I see are attacks and accusations. Please come with some solutions and I could even support it Im not stuck on one party Id like to see several of them with proportional representation.

I have been south of the border... and off the beaten path away from tourist hot spots... ang guess what... most do not speak English.... or at least in a dialect I can understand. To be honest, that is fine, as I am in another country where English is not close to being the majority language.
Why bend over backwards to allow non-english speakers the same freedom we english speakers have? This is not racist... but perhaps is a bit ethnocentist. If you want to become a citizen, you need to have the basic skills to pass the test... not be catered to.

No, you make a very good point. I do see how it could be racist. I did not watch any of the Tea Party convention coverage - all I really had to go on was the above post by Cyrano. The fact that Palin spoke at the convention is very disturbing. She's not what i have in mind to run against Obama in 2012.

I agree Pico at that level but the overall overture is designed to appeal to hatred, racism and fear. It trys to imply that Obama was elected by illiterate blacks and Mexicans who shouldn't vote. I know you want to rationalize it due to your support for the surface ideals of the tea party movement.
Now I would like to see the laws enforced and the people who come here to do it legally. I would like to see English as the official language with the expectation that you learn it before becoming a citizen. Those are entirely reasonable and Ill bet there are few if any other countries that will take you if you don't know the language. But the politicians who keep saying this stuff don't do anything about it except keep saying it and most of them are Republicans.

Language should be left up to the free market. If the free market requires you to speak English, either you will learn it, or you will be jobless. Likewise with any other language, or any other skill. If literacy is a requirement for meaningful employment, either you will learn to read or you will be unemployed in a meaningful job.
Now, that doesn't mean we can't try to curb the illiteracy rate, but should we make it ILLEGAL to not be able to read?
This is a matter of personal freedom (and half the argument for a free market is freedom).

I can see your argument but I don't think anyone is suggesting that it be illegal to be illiterate. Another issue is that its a cost to our services to have to have all these additional languages and it seems to makes sense to have one official language like most countries have. Im not against people learning other languages at all but I feel its an issue of cost and convenience.

I agree with Megan McCain that Tom Tancredo is a racist. However, I went to a Tea Party in Worcester in 2009 and not one speaker made those type of comments. A few speakers did speak out about illegal immigration, after all it is illegal. One can be against illegal immigration without being a racist.

Maybe I'm racist, and really I could care. But while I don't totally agree with the story. I think Mexicans are fucking lazy. Sure we know "some" work hard and shit like that. But they want to convert America into Mexico. If you want Mexico...STAY THERE. If you want the freedoms we do then change your own damn country, don't change ours.
I'm so sick of things looking like were only half American now. Everything I read now comes in Spanish too. Food labels have Spanish underneath. Things gotta be done in spanish. Signs now tend to have spanish on them too. Its stupid. At least learn to speak our language or fo the fuck home. I like my heritage too but I know this is America not Italy.
I think the worst thing I have heard is some spanish groups want some major changes done like:
A. The flag changed to have a small mexican logo on it.
B. The national anthem also sung in spanish after the english version.
How fucking stupid. Now your just wanting change because of your dumb heritage.
I don't see people from other countries coming here and saying "You americans need to change what makes you america to suite me instead!" Lame as hell.
I'll be even more of an ass and say if it wasn't for the $2 an hour jobs here, the mexicans wouldn't even care about us. They'd just move on to another country. As I said there are hard working mexicans here. I know of some since we have a big mexican population near by....BUT there are more lame ass lazy ones who leech our system and want pathetic changes. Two cities over there is a known spot where TONS of them come here illegally to get work.
And no I don't care about their situation. Theres a way to get in here legally. Is it easy? Eh. But its there for a reason non the less. People seem to think america should just be open to everyone. Yeah...remember that next time you can't stand the crashing economy, the job less, no health insurance. As it is we can't maintain the population we have let alone tons of illegals. >.>

This post just shows your vast ignorance about the history of your own country.
(1) The United States of America has ALWAYS been a bastion of diversity. We are the world's collective orphans.
(2) Who the hell is talking about ILLEGAL immigrants? Just because someone doesn't speak English very well does not mean they are illegal.
It's clear you've never stepped foot out of your white bread middle class town.
Here's some news for you buddy: America is NOT only the Midwest. The COASTS are just as much American as any other place in this nation, and in the COASTS you see the biggest part of American diversity.
There is no one culture here, except the conglomeration of many cultures. That's one of the things that makes this nation great, and here ignorant people like you deride it. People like you should have to forfeit your citizenship to Cuban's braving the ocean to have a chance to be a part of this country.

I know its made of many cultures. No duh. What I am saying is theres a difference between being an american and wanting america to be your native country. Only with the mexicans do I ever hear of thse silly issues where they want stupid things.
And yes I know my post was a little off track. We cna be diversified without having to cram a specific ethnicity down someones throat. Mexicans have done a great job of doing that. People may say the blacks get away with alot sometimes, but I don't see them trying to turn America into Africa. >.>

Harry Reid's Negroes knew this thread-topic was a hypercubed cul de sac deadend/deadstart Rod Serling paradoxical argument-trap from the get-go. Nothing can stop the Steve King-monstrosity, that is the Tea Party steamroller... leaving a trail of flattened graveyard-whistlers, like Keith, Wolf, Megan, Maureen, etc., who were pretty-much one-dimensional to begin-with.

I agree its quite a powerful movement. But I laugh that anyone thinks its not a Republican/corporate operation.
