Not even safe inside your own mind

I know a lot of us aren't anyways, but now they want to suggest ways to dream up getting into our heads.

Quote:
A would-be terrorist tries to board a plane, bent on mass murder. As he walks through a security checkpoint, fidgeting and glancing around, a network of high-tech machines analyzes his body language and reads his mind.

Screeners pull him aside.

Tragedy is averted.

As far-fetched as that sounds, systems that aim to get inside an evildoer's head are among the proposals floated by security experts thinking beyond the X-ray machines and metal detectors used on millions of passengers and bags each year.

Why not just hire this woman - she could sit at the gates and ask questions?

Can I have your first name only.... and your birthday please?

All joking aside - pretty good article to read and consider.

Or you could hire Gene Simmons....

Quote:
Gene Simmons has shown off the most famous tongue in rock – licking envelopes in a bookshop.

The former Kiss bassist displayed his pliable asset while going undercover as a psychic for a new US prank show.

Simmons, 60, took on the role of an employee at the 'Mystic Journey Bookstore' in Venice, California.

The musician pretended to read visitors’ minds, meditate and look into a crystal ball.

The hilarious scenes were shown on I Get That A Lot, in which celebrities try their hand at unusual jobs – and trying to fool members of the public.

I kind of like that we are getting to the point where we can hook up equipment to our heads and use the signals that our brain relays and we can actually retrieve visuals as we think them. So far it is only in black and white, but recognizable words have been retrieved. A person looks at a word and the program uses the signal processing inside the brain to correctly draw the word. Fascinating. I wish I had the link to the story but that was last years news. Scientists are pretty sure they can get the resolution down much better and that color will be able to be retrieved.

However, that said, I don't like that imagery could be taken from me as I pass through a screening area.

As scary as it is, if Humankind continuous to evolve technologically, eventually all of these things are eventually going to pass.

What is considered private is going to continue to be more and more available to others (has been steadily happening since the beginning of the species).

Individuals are going to become less and less distinct (mass media has assured that everyone in any location has access to the same ideas).

(less scary) Accent differences are eventually going to decrease a little bit (just like when race mixing eventually leads to less and less "pure" distinct genetic lines as time progresses).

etc.

All of these things are going to come to pass because human beings keep getting better and better at creating networks. We ARE all becoming more connected, and if the trend continues (we don't go extinct or lose all of our technology), we could actually in theory become the Mass Collective Consciousness you read about in science fiction.

Mammals do not exist well as insect colonies.

here we are all slowly descending into a slave cast and you are applauding the tragedy.

We really do need the Ruskies to invade just to get our freedoms back and stop all this shit.

Yeah... that's the answer...

He wasn't applauding it. He clearly stated it was scary.

It's a likely prediction. It's true we are more connected than ever before in human history, and our efforts throughout history have been a striving to reach closer, faster connection. Like many of the things in sci-fi have become a reality, or look to become reality very soon, it seems inevitable to me that if things continue this way, we will also become something eerily close to the Borg.

I just had an after-thought to add...

We seem to be paradoxical creatures in that we strive to be connected, and yet at the same time yearn for individuality, this sense of being "special" and "different." I suppose it's one of our great tragedies that we can never completely have both at the same time. The more we achieve one, the more we seem to lose the other. And at the same time, if we are deprived of one, the other cannot fully flourish.

where to begin ...

first - Mind Reading Machines are already here (think active MRI scans of a conscious brain) but the TRANSLATION SOFTWARE hasn't been written yet. so the issue isn't if but when ... and How Accurate that Software will be (and if it is produced in Redmond, Washington, how many patches will it need per day?)

second - analysis of body language is not only old hat, but humans are still better at it than machines. those of us who are perceived by others as being 'intuitive' as far as people go (or telepathic or sensitive) aren't all psychics, We Pay Attention.

third - if the side effect of personal freedom is allowing mass murder, maybe the insect model is worth looking at, seriously. Individuality at the cost of masses of innocent lives isn't a goal worth pursuing ... but I don't have a spiritual agenda to push forward either ...

really this comes down to a REFINEMENT of stuff that's already been in place for a decade.

first there was Facial Scanning as the BIG BROTHER DOOM - then people started realizing that even the best face scanners still have an error rate so high that it's now just a backup for standard screening procedures - plus every digital camera made after 2008 hasFacial Scanning built into it.

then there was Profiling - yeah, I can see the new penitentiaries all over housing those who have been jailed due to profiling ...

does anyone remember when the Institution of the Zip Code was considered a heavy handed government attempt to Gain Complete Control over people's lives?

does anyone remember when the first Phone Book was castigated for giving Too Much Public Information?

does anyone remember when Fingerprinting was considered The Death Of Freedom?

does anyone remember the History Of Errors that makes up the vast majority of clarion calls to defend liberty against Big Brother?

just wondering ...

It's an irrefutable science? I guess that's why intuition is always 100% accurate.

If we spend more time paying attention, we spend just as much time second-guessing our conclusions before we act on them. Or we jump impulsively to act on them, and sometimes are completely wrong. We can usually correctly sense something is not right, but we can't as easily sense what exactly that is.

You can choose to remain out of the phone books.

Facial scanning, zip codes and finger prints are nothing compared to picking apart someone's personal, private thoughts just so that they can travel.

If we adopted an insect model then mass murder would not be a bad thing, because the colony would always be more important than the individuals within it. Killing off 4 billion humans would then be a logical way to secure the safety and sutainability of this big colony of humans on earth! Its our individuality which has led to the individual being valued, making murder a crime.

No Privacy

Feds push for tracking cell phones

n that case, the Obama administration has argued that warrantless tracking is permitted because
Americans enjoy no "reasonable expectation of privacy"
in their--or at least their cell phones'--whereabouts.
U.S. Department of Justice lawyers say that "a customer's
Fourth Amendment rights are not violated when the phone company
reveals to the government its own records"
that show where a mobile device placed and received calls.

Those claims have alarmed the ACLU and other civil liberties groups,
which have opposed the Justice Department's request
and plan to tell the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia
that Americans' privacy deserves more protection and
judicial oversight than what the administration has proposed.

How it all started:
Two years ago,
when the FBI was stymied by a band of armed robbers known as the
"Scarecrow Bandits" that had robbed more than 20 Texas banks,
it came up with a novel method of locating the thieves.

FBI agents obtained logs from mobile phone companies corresponding
to what their cellular towers had recorded at the time
of a dozen different bank robberies in the Dallas area.
The voluminous records showed that two phones had made calls
around the time of all 12 heists,
and that those phones belonged to men named Tony Hewitt
and Corey Duffey.
A jury eventually convicted the duo of multiple bank robbery
and weapons charges.
Even though police are tapping into the locations of mobile phones
thousands of times a year, the legal ground rules remain unclear,
and federal privacy laws written a generation ago are ambiguous at best.
On Friday, the first federal appeals court to consider the topic
will hear oral arguments (PDF) in a case that could establish
new standards for locating wireless devices.
