Jobless / Unemployed / Worried?
http://www.armageddononline.org/Jobl...8-percent.html
I wanted to get a feel for where people stand concerning unemployment and concern in the economy. Obviously, I'm beyond the concern part (har har) and on the actual stage of being laid off.
I'm going to throw in a poll, just choose whatever situation bets fits your current one. I will leave it anonymous.

I feel for you MM.
I'm retired but, lost a ton of my IRA,
that was to sustain me in the Golden Years. LOL
Now, I'm looking for something part time like,
door greeter at wally's world.
I feel it will get worse and it is going to take a long time to come out of this.
Probably a decade at least, and 4 or 5 decades to pay down the debt, if then.

Weird. Just today I got a call from an employer that I interviewed with back in October. They stated that they "just received" my resume and would like to chat with me. I'll call them back toward the end of the day today. On one hand, I'm curious if they've got part-time work for me; on the other, I don't want work to interfere with school (as I've learned that 2nd quarter is going to be quite the doozy).
Hmmmm. Still pondering how they just received my resume...

I'm a driver for a construction company here in Florida. As strange as it might sound I think I'm safe for now.
Still working 50 + hours a week, others I know are lucky to get 35 hours a week.

US jobless rate is 8.1% and by summer it will likely be 10% and by year's end 12% is predicted. In the last 4 months 2.58 million Americans and since the recession started in December 2007 4.4 million Americans have lost their jobs. My company has already weathered a 5% cut in state funding with more and deeper cuts due by July. I could be unemployed by then.

I was one of the first casualties of the recession, losing my job back in Jan '08. My wife just lost her job about a month ago. I'm back in school now finishing my degree and I graduate in December. After that I may do grad school if I can get in, or I might try a number of other things. I suspect that a number of people are just going to remain jobless for quite a while. There are ways I can be productive during the down time if I can't find anything right away. At least we don't have to worry about being homeless.

knowing what you do would help.
I got some other bad news about 9pm this evening. My friend, with 2 kids and a house, who I'd worked with for going on 3 years, got laid off from the same shop.
This was a shop of about 350 people, maybe 400. They cut 30-35 jobs in January... I was safe. They then cut around 35 more before Feb. 1st. I wasnt safe. From what I heard tonight, they cut 35+ more, and are moving from having 3- 8 hour shifts (open 24 hours a day) to having 2 - 10 hour shifts, in which ppl work 4 days a week.
Just so you know, 1 year ago, I was so busy I couldn't barely make time to sit around and "help" AO. There was a mandatory 24 hours a month overtime.... basically 2-3 Saturdays due to the fact that the shop had a 24 hour schedule... so getting "in" when there weren't others working was hard. You had to basically go in when others didn't.
It's gone from 24 hours overtime, mandatory 16 of that on the weekend, to being CLOSED on the weekend ENTIRELY, laid off 20-30+% of the people working there..... within a year.
We manufactured parts for caterpillar, john deere.. etc. Heavy construction... heavy machinery.... housing.... mining.... drilling..... wind energy..... Numerous smaller businesses. Caterpillar was the biggest.
Well that's my scenario.... just thought I would share. I feel worse for my friend than I do for myself, it completely sucks ass, and it makes me ill to think that he could lose anything he's built over the past few years.

Sadly the times ahead is why i'm still at wally world, hate the job, but its going to be one of the ones that is there in the long run, the more broke people get, the more they are going to look for the cheapest place in town to shop.
i'll take a steady check at 11 a hour over a short term job that will get cut or layed off later any day.
I think i should be fine, till the bottom drops totally out, then its time to head to the hills anyway.
Sadly i think what we are seeing is just the tip of it.. there is a lot more to come.

I'm a Global Reporting Manager for a large corporate travel management company and I work on the DuPont account. DuPont has had a 50% reduction in travel since the 4th Q of 2008. If it continues to decline - I could potentially lose my job. I worry each and every day. Now that I am a single mom with three teenage sons, a mortgage, car payment,etc.. and no savings - I ran through that trying to get divorced - I would be in deep shit if I did lose my job. Me and the kids would have to move in with my mother and attempt to see the house which would not be easy in the Florida market. I'd have to give up my 4 dogs which probably worries me more than anything. I cannot imagine taking them to the SPCA. I know its stupid to worry about such things but I can't help it.

Well, my job has been getting more business lately, so not much concern, but I think the recession will go well into the summer and even winter months.
No coming out of this one. I believe we will see a 15+% unemployment rate at some point.

I work doing so many different maintenance things that I can't see any of us (the crew) getting laid off unless we fuck up big time. of course, the cleaners and janitors and maintenance folk are the ones in the best position during times of financial crises - there will always be Rich and those Rich will always need people to keep them clean and smelling good. and mow the lawns, clean the toilets, haul the garbage and repair the furnace.
but I am not liking my job a lot because I've been in the same place for a while now (odd 'sabbaticals' due to medical and life issues along with lots of vacation time).
so I am one of those whiners who is 'trapped' in a job he doesn't like too much, but it pays well and comes with benefits.
at this point I forgive anyone who flames me for whining, and I send positive energy to those working on getting by for sustainable success.
and I think what's going on now is going to need a Big Distraction soon. wasn't there a Huge War soon after the last major world wide economic disaster?

I'm retired, medically, but not really going "woohooo" all about it. I know all too well how thin the line is that I am hanging from. Things get worse, they will affect people like me first.

I guess you all need to prepare yourselves for the worst now. SERIOUSLY consider a gun to protect your wares and food. Invest your money in seeds for vegetables and materials to build a self-sustaining garden.

i am with random, things are going to get a hell of alot worse... i do masonry and i have been laid off since november, mostly due to weather, but my boss isn't too optimistic about this year. i feel for the people in the big cities... actually i feel for anyone who doesn't know some basic horticulture, hunting, and edible plant identification skills... i suppose i am one of the lucky ones(as usual - i am a tiger afterall) as my family has 77 acres on top of a mountain in rural pennsylvania that we can retreat to if things get really bad around here.

I just found out that the grocery store I work at recorded a profit for the first period (first four weeks) of this year of over $120,000. For a modestly sized store, that's pretty damn good. Since people have top eat, I guess you could say that my job is probably one of the more secure ones around at the moment.
Uki, I am incredibly jealous of you. I would love to have that kind of property. Retreat or not, owning property that can sustain one's family is the best investment one can make at this point.

until the supplies stop rolling in... once the jobs that revolve around importing, exporting, and transporting food to the stores breakdown, you'll be out of a job real fast. do you actually think starving people with no job are going to allow food to go anywhere, let alone pay for it with the money they won't have? it's going to be a chain reaction... eventually your job will become one of the most dangerous jobs there is.

we have three acres here that we own adjacent to another 19 that my girlfriends family owns and another 16 acres at her parents house... as good as that sounds, it won't stop people from invading it and stealing what you have or worse... this is why it could get bad around here. private property will become obsolete once the social structures breakdown... it will be a god damn free for all. we also might simply disappear into the woods and the mountains away from roads and people... then again i might just die of a stroke and it won't matter anyhow.

I can make the unemployment and worry problems disapear quickly and permanently while at the same time managing the planet into a state of perfection as it was before man made pollution.
No moneychangers or salesman in the Temple of God is still the only the answer.

As long as people have cardiac problems, I have a job.
sad isn't it? <I hook em up for home use> and do ekg's
at other places etc..
I predict local doctors going into private practice and using
my services more as the hospitals and the insurance industry's
self-destruct along with all of the other money grubbers.
Doctors want CASH MONEY and when hospitals
start shutting down or cutting hours <which they already have>
the doctors will either flee the area or start their own practice.
Check this out: even mexico is waiting with "salavating lips" for
the demise of the USA.
