Who has ever been hooked on an Online RPG?

An online Massive Multiplayer RPG (role-playing-game)...... one's like everquest... diablo.

Three years ago i started playing a game called Runescape. The graphics were absolutely horrible and the game in general sucked...... but I couldn't stop playing. I would stay up all night mining coal and day dream about coming home and playing it after school. My grades dropped....... everything. I picked up all the in-game lingo and started using it online and in real life. I was a mess. My friends would call to make plans and I would just rather stay home and play this horrible game. But I wasn't the only one, millions of other people from across the world are addicted to it just as I was... I'm just thankful that I am not anymore.

Now the game is 3-d. I couldn't play it if I wanted too because my computer is too slow, but if you want to check it out for yourself go to www.runescape.com and at the bottom you can play Runescape Classic. I think you will be surprised to see that 'this' is what almost ruined my life lol.

Has anyone else here ever been addicted to an RPG and have no idea why?

Forgot to mention

When you die in the game you lose your items. Whenever I died in the game, my whole body would become cold and I felt as if there was nothing to live for, and there was no purpose for life lol. Then I would fall asleep depressed and start playing again two hours later, and work my way up to where I was previously.

Yep MMORPG are the shizzle. I'd literally play all through the night sometimes and even through the day, then grab some munchies in between load times, heh good times. The best is being part of a clan/guild and talking over teamspeak or some other voice program with your buds. Hours upon hours of entertainment when you have a bunch of your buddies drunk on it heh.

I have the exact same problem with online games like Battlefield 1942 and Call of Duty. I just cant get enough. I will spend a few hours playing these games daily, only it hasnt affected my grades. Sometimes i will play these games instead of going out with my friends. Its so sad

Clans are the coolest thing in the world. I am in one myself for Call of Duty ( i am [PA]{pvt} Zach)
Definately fun being able to talk to other people on teamspeaks about in game stuff or random things. Got to love it.

I used to play Ragnarok (private servers). Then my friend made one, and it basicly had people that we knew closely or just online buddies. It died off after everyone became greedy and annoying asking my friend (the host) for items. And speaking of addiction, I never played any other game than Starcraft that sucked the living soul out of me for that period of gaming. I never thought possible that I would actually be playing one day from the evening to 6 o'clock in the morning...

None of those games are actually mmorpgs though, not sure what Ragnarok is, have heard of it though. Those are just normal fps small multiplayer games Zach, what until you hit the mmorpgs, than you'll know true addiction :) Planetside is a MMOFPS game, it's not bad but fps games in general don't hold my interest for long either way.

I tried that. Ragnarok is a MMRPG, i think its japaneese? I tried playing it once but my computer just could not handle it lol. Runescape was the only game my computer could load.

Ive played online games, none that require payment tho. I liked playing the games for recreational value, but to go that nuts over one is just insane.

I have seen news reports on ppl who have played EverCrack so much that they've lost their spouses, homes, cars, jobs etc all because they wanted to be on the game 24/7. I've also known people that hooked up in the games, then hooked up in real life and got married....only to have the marriage crash because of...you guessed it, the games.

I'd say that BF 1942 is the number 1 multiplayer firstperson shooter up to date. Must admit though, COD's M1a1 carbine is total kickass. No doubt, it's a topnotch firearm and I'd select it as my weapon of choice.

OMG!!! I have a confession to make. I too play Runescape (for about 2 and a half weeks now) and I do have a problem. I once woke up frantic, damn near in a panic because I had to mine coal!! You know they pay between 100 and 150gp per coal ore now depending on how despirate the other player is and where you are in the game. Falador has the best prices I've found. They avg about 130gp. I'm so terrible... I have to list my stats now:

Combat lvl 50
Attack lvl 41
Hitpoints 41
Strength lvl 44
Defence lvl 38
Mining lvl 52
Smelting/Smithing lvl 41
Magic lvl 18
Crafting lvl 24
Fishing lvl 18
Cooking lvl 30
Firemaking lvl 25
Woodcutting lvl 21
Runecrafting lvl 9
Prayer lvl 22
Archery lvl 4

My current goal was to get some Rune pl8 and legs. But now I'm gonna have to shelve the game. Luckily, I'll be back home soon and I won't be playing. I'll have to quit mining cold turkey, but I can do it... Yes... I can. See, I'm a miner not a fighter. I only increased my combat pts so that ppl wouldn't call me a "n00b". But I'll have to say goodbye to runescape properly tomorrow. Although... I will miss those guards at Al Kharid, "Brother, I will help thee with this infidel!!" Hahahaha

Virtual island sells for $26,500 in cyber assets

Quote:
15 December 2004 NewScientist.com news service

A treasure island that exists only as computer bytes within an online role-playing game has been sold for the equivalent of $26,500, the company behind the game announced on Tuesday.
The island, located off a newly discovered continent on the planet Calypso in the computer game Project Entropia, was bought by David Storey, a 22-year-old player based in Australia. Storey outbid another player during an auction lasting several months and paid 265,000 Project Entropia Dollars (PEDs) for the property.
Project Entropia is unique among "massive multiplayer online role-playing" games (MMPORGs) in that virtual money can be exchanged for real cash and vice-versa through a currency exchange inside the game. This is the most anyone has ever paid for any single item in an online game, says Edward Castronova, an expert in the economics of virtual worlds.
"I intend to create a thriving, fully functional settlement for all to enjoy," Storey says in a statement released by MindArk, the company behind Project Entropia. "The goal is to make Treasure Island the best it can be to serve the population of Calypso."
The island consists of 6000 acres and includes a castle, a mine and fantastic beasts to hunt. "The owner has complete mining and hunting taxation rights and can also allocate parcels of land to sell to other players," says Marco Behrmann, a representative of MindArk. "[Storey] sees it as an investment." Natural resources Players can earn money within the game by turning natural resources into valuable items or by buying more PEDs with real money. However, they must also pay real money to keep their possessions in working order. This is how MindArk makes money from the game, as it does not charge players a monthly subscription fee. The line between real and virtual economies has begun to blur in several other MMPORGs. Items obtained in games such as Everquest have been sold through auction sites like eBay for thousands of dollars in real cash, for example. Castronova, at Indiana University in the US, says the amount of money paid is little when compared with the total amount of money already made through such games. "If you think Project Entropia is going to grow and be a very successful game, this could be a very profitable investment indeed," he told New Scientist.
Castronova says millions of dollars are tied up in various different computer game worlds. "It may or may not be a wise investment in the end," he adds. "But it's probably wiser than many junk bond investments."

Gamer wins back virtual booty in court battle

23 December 2003 NewScientist.com news service

A court in China has ordered an online computer games company to return virtual belongings to a player whose account was hacked and looted.
The Chaoyang District People's Court in Beijing ruled last Thursday that the company must return the player's virtual stash because it had allowed the theft to take place in the first place.
Li Hongchen, 24, spent two years and more than 10,000 yuan ($1,210), amassing a cache of virtual money and weapons in the online game "Hongyue", or "Red Moon". In February, however, Hongchen found his belongings had been pilfered by a hacker who gained access through the game's central servers. The software firm behind the game, Beijing Arctic Ice Technology Development, responded that his possessions had no real world value and represented only "piles of data". Hongchen took the company to court requesting 10,000 yuan in compensation.
"I exchanged the equipment with my labour, time, wisdom and money, and of course they are my belongings," Hongchen told the Chinese news site Xinhuanet. Virtual property rights
The court ruled that the games firm must return Hongchen's virtual belongings. The company was found liable because flaws in its servers had allowed the hacker to gain access to Hongchen's account. It has not been revealed whether the company must also pay out damages.
The court battle is the "first virtual property rights dispute case" in China, says Xinhuanet. But the case is just another example of how the line between online games and the real world have begun to blur. Some gamers already trade game goods and characters for real money through online auction sites like eBay. Edward Castronova, an economist at California State University at Fullerton, calculated that those playing the popular US game Everquest could make on average $3.42 an hour by simply playing the game.
Some companies have sought to exploit this phenomenon by developing games that integrate real money. Project Entropia, launched in January 2003, lets players buy equipment with money and exchange goods acquired through the game for real cash.
Man, we must be some bored assed motherfuqers. These 2 articles were taken from a science website. NewScientist

Yup! I can tell you exactly where you'd be. ON MY FRIEND LIST! Come on, we could have had a huge operation going on. We could set up shop in Lumby first, to get us a couple of noob slaves... I mean employees. Then they would go out and work on only one area each. One noob would fish, the other would work on woodcutting and so on. I'm telling you, we (and a few other high lvl players) could OWN Runescape! We'd have to be members eventually, so we could store all the stuff our noobhoes would give us in exchange for our guidance and protection, or whatever. My goodness, it would be beautiful. We'd hold down some properties in runescape and sell our wares to the rich and desperate! We'd be like a gang and stuff. And we'd pick a cool name, like an acronym, or something. And people would be banging down our doors to be a part of it. Oh... the beauty of it all.... The beauty!

Yeah I used to play Eve-Online (was a volunteer for the company too), it's not really like homeworld since homeworld is an rts game, but eve-online is incredible. Defiantely one of the best visuals in an mmorpg. Great storyline and gameplay to boast aswell.

The only one I've played is Diablo: Lord of Destruction. It was pretty fun, I got hooked on it pretty bad. I stopped playing for a couple of months, then reinstalled it and played it for quite a while. I only stopped because someone hacked into my account and stole everything. It pissed me off so bad, so now, I'm sticking to first person shooting games.
