So we have have to consider the eruption of class warfare as a real possibility, given the proximity of these two situations. It should also be noted that the guns in the hands of these Mexican drug cartels, are mostly American made. A key danger I have warned about repeatedly on these boards.
Hypothetically, suppose I would be a CIA agent. Also hypothetically, suppose I was an extreme fanatic seeking to advance the cause of a North American Union.

How would I go about doing that?

Neither out-going President Bush nor current President Obama are aware of my activities and they have not sanctioned them. None of the Cabinet members are aware and neither is Director CIA aware nor has he sanctioned or authorized my activities.

I have a team of highly trained individuals working with me whom I have hand-picked over the years. They are equally fanatical, and extremely loyal to me. I also have associates in the CIA who operate in other regions of the world who are on the same page of music that I'm on, plus over the years I have acquired friends and allies who are equally fanatical in other US government departments and agencies, like the FBI, DEA, NSA, DIA, OSI and so on who are willing to help me and others like me advance our cause.

I also have numerous numbered bank accounts all over the world filled with money I have obtained legally from covert operations, illegally from covert operations by padding expenses and putting the surplus in the bank (eg claiming I need $400,000 for a black operation that only really requires $150,000 and then siphoning off the other $250,000 and hiding it in a bank), plus from illegal operations such as the sale of information, drugs or weapons to clandestine 3rd parties.

Well, I might pose as a US-based drug lord and introduce myself to Mexican drug-lords. I'd offer to move and sell their product, plus in order to gain their confidence, I might claim to have access to Intel that would protect them and their operations and then throw them a bone once in a while.

Once we reached a comfortable relationship, I'd offer them my products from Afghanistan, Turkey, Laos/Thailand and other places to sell, to allow them to gain additional wealth by expanding their markets locally.

Then, using a 3rd Party, I'd feed Intel to groups in order to start a war between the various drug lords, then increase the amount of money, drugs and weapons I was giving them in hopes of expanding the conflict.

The purpose of doing that is to create the opportunity of US involvement (and my supporters in other agencies would be simultaneously "spreading the word" and "planting the bug" and "sowing the seeds" of US involvement to certain of the president's advisors and selected people in the Cabinet).

Once the US is involved, then I would want to expand the conflict even further by creating civil unrest and fomenting cross-border battles between the drug cartels and others, plus start funding 5th Column Movements seeking to take advantage of the chaos to gain control of the Mexican government.

As civil war breaks out and the threat increases to the US, it would be more likely for the US take control of the Mexican government in order to prevent its collapse and once that happened, the way would be paved for a merger between the US and Mexico to maintain peace and stability.

I hope, I am not alone who feels slightly annoyed in recent years by strange sequence of paranoid media campaigns accompanying basically fruitless scientific or near-scientific projects. Nuclear winter, AIDS, ozone holes, global warming, cloning, human genome, Year 2k bug, SARS ... Importance of these themes and quality of science behind them is varying yet, certainly, there is something in common among them. In particular, it's hardly possible to get rid of an impression that all these campaigns are the result of tireless efforts of some groups of skilful imagemakers and public relations experts rather than that they were just spontaneous interest of independent press to some honest scientific publication.
Well, so what is wrong with this? Perhaps, the system of converting science into world news headlines is slightly corrupted today; but whether the problem is sufficiently important to talk about? Does it make much harm if influential academic gangs are so successful presenting their achievements, findings or just fantasies in this way?
The following story of 10-years-long misfortunes accompanying, perhaps, the most important practical breakthrough in medicine of the recent 20-30 years proves that it does. When a site gets SO heavy-handed that they start banning proxies, it's trivial to intentionally get a proxy banned, and to do that often, with the result of the site traffic falling off drastically!

And the site, which I won't name, already has the owner whining about losing his Google ad account, and begging users to subscribe, but his attitude just drives more and more users away. Only the TRUE loonies will pay, and there aren't even enough of THEM left.

It would be nice to see that site go away.

Here, things are SO MUCH nicer. Still a few clueless users posting nonsense, but at least 100 OTHER sock-puppets don't chime in supporting the nonsense without having ever read the links.
