Australian Race Riots
I might as well offer my perspective on the issue. I don't live in Sydney but I've lived there and know enough about the situation to make a reasonable judgement.
This was inevitable. Australia has always been known as a multicultural nation of recent and on the most part that works fine but unfortunately there are always a few idiots and people tend to become mindless shits once they form gangs and so we get this violence.
For years the lebanese and 'wog' Australians have built a reputation for themselves in Sydney as being thugs. News of wog gangs assaulting Aussie blokes and raping Aussie girls has been common and building up over the years. For the most part they also get away with it so obviously this leads to even more resentment.
There are also a significant amount of Aussies that are racist dickheads and treat the wogs like shit, adding to the tension on both sides. Also let's not forget 911, simply making matters even worse.
This finally erupted when last week, three volunteer lifegaurds had the crap beaten out of them by a gang of wogs. This has resulted in the local youths getting drunk, grabbing any sort of weapon and roaming the streets as they look for anyone of arab or wog appearance to seek their own form of justice upon.
The fact that this is so huge (5000 people on Sunday) is a reflection of the tension and resentment that has been building up within this community. Mixed with alcohol this leads to a bunch of angry bastards looking for a fight.
The unfortunate facts are that mobs on both sides aren't dealing with eachother, they're attacking innocent people, destroying random cars and generally avoiding eachother unless they can be sure of a victory.
This won't go away anytime soon and I wouldn't be surprised if certain people that truly are racist make things worse to the point where military action may be necessary. Hopefully that won't happen.
Let it be clear that this is not one sided, this tension is the fault of both sides. To a degree, immigrants need to learn how to accept some basic fundamentals of Australian law and culture and everyone else needs to accept that people don't have to abandon their beliefs just because it's not the commonly held belief.
Here are a few articles from local papers:

Slang for describing mediterranian people... (greeks, italians, some arabs)
It's a commonly accepted term within Australia used in a non-offensive manner.
Some say it supposedly stands for Western Oriental Gentleman

Funny though that the 'incidents' involving Middle Eastern types on the rampage are WELL documented and DESCRIBED but the incidents involving White Aussies are just passed over or barely mentioned.
It is not blatant, but the journalist who wrote those articles is letting their own agenda show with their semantic focus and affected syntax. Bigotry comes in many forms and can be as subtle as an expensive perfume.
And it's funny how this all 'Began' with wogs beating up lifeguards - I remember once how a riot in Malaysia 'began' when a group of locals 'attacked' a white businessman who was 'innocently' fucking children in a local brothel.
Prejudice and bigotry are POV based - and the subtle differences between POV's is where a lot of the violence occurs.

Agreed. There's no doubt in my mind that the wog Australians have taken shit from the locals for a long time, pressure has been building on both sides and it's now a matter of who's supposedly tougher.
The government will continue to criticise the riots regardless of cause, it is the small people like journalists that will try and manipulate public opinion or get their own message across by abusing their power.
This will never blow over, even if the riots calm down, there will always a sense of uneasiness between these groups.

I see how you feel about racism. IT SUCKS! Racism is evrywhere and no metter what it will always be racism and violence and believe me it will get WOREST! So eventually the government will have to step in and take control of the situation pretty soon.

Today the government passes laws to give the police more power in this situation. Hopefully it will be enough.

Police given power to "lockdown" parts of Sydney
SYDNEY (Reuters) - An emergency sitting of parliament passed special laws on Thursday allowing Sydney police to "lockdown" parts of Australia's biggest city to stop racial unrest. After two nights of racial violence in Sydney's beachside suburbs this week, the New South Wales (NSW) state parliament also increased the penalty for rioting from 10 to 15 years and doubled the sentence for affray to 10 years.
"Louts and criminals have effectively declared war on our society and we are not going to let them undermine our way of life," Morris Iemma, NSW state premier, told the emergency sitting of parliament in Sydney.
Police were also given power to ban alcohol.
Sydney's racial violence erupted at Cronulla last Sunday when some 3,000 people, some yelling racist chants, attacked people of Middle East appearance, saying they were defending their beach from Lebanese youth gangs. Police said white supremacists incited violence at Cronulla.
Lebanese and Muslim youths retaliated with two nights of violence in several different beachside suburbs.
For the past two nights Sydney has been calm, with more than 450 police patrolling streets and erecting roadblocks to check drivers moving into areas of previous unrest.
Racist mobile telephone text messages and emails continue to circulate calling for violence this Sunday, despite calls from leaders of surfing and Arab-Muslim communities for calm.
NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney urged people on Thursday to ensure Sydney remained peaceful and to bring the spirit of Christmas back to the city.
"The spirit of Christmas has simply disappeared out of this city," he told reporters. "It is up to all of us, not only the police, but people of goodwill, to bring the spirit of Christmas back into this city."
Moroney said an extra 1,000 police would be on duty on Saturday and an extra 1,500 on Sunday to prevent violence.
He said police were ready to immediately use their new powers, which also allows them to stop and search people and vehicles and seize vehicles and mobile telephones.
But Moroney urged people to go about their normal end-of-year activities this weekend, including going to the beach.
"There's no restriction on going to the beach," he said.
"There are certainly legal restrictions if you are going to engage in unlawful conduct, riotous behavior, assault malicious damage or whatever the case may be."
This must be what your talking about. Lets hope dont it works!

I can't rant enough about situations like these. I'm just glad you don't live anywhere near there.

My friend used to live in Sydney. I heard it was a VERY diverse place, with a large number of Lebanese immigrants. Can there really be that much racism with such a large non-white population? Or do the non-whites only stay in the inner city?

unless i'm reading this wrong, you are under the belief it is only coming from whites, as an australian i can tell you its from both sides, also the non-whites are racist among themselvs too and to your question, its mixed everywhere (though some areas are more dominated by one race)
the fault is the media, their the one's always going on about middle eastern people being terrorists and stuff

True.
As human beings, the people within the area are the ones getting scarred by all this. Racism is something that'll take generations of postive bonding to illiminate or at least keep the best minimum. Too bad stubborn ignorant fucks are inevitably born no matter what.
